Join your fellow buccaneers for a thunderin' grrrrrreat time at Brier Library's KidScare!

We'll be getting ready for SeaScare with stories, songs, games and crafts, plus grub and grog (snacks and juice). We will also be joined by a Sno-Isle Libraries Bookmobile and South County Fire with an opportunity to get close-up look at a fire truck!

We encourage the kids to meet back at the library with their pirate hats on at 6:00 pm on August 13th to walk with us in the SeaScare Parade!

No pre-registration required this year -- register at the event starting at 10 a.m.

Captain Ken, Barnacle Billy and Carmichael Create a Parade

Many years ago, Carmichael the sea cucumber lived in Brier Bay. Carmichael was lonely, because all the other sea creatures thought he was ugly and slow. His only friend was Barnacle Billy, an odd-looking octopus that dressed like a pirate - and who, for some reason, had a beard.

One day, Carmichael saw all the other sea creatures heading down to Seattle for the SeaFair Torchlight Parade, and he asked if he could join them. But they said no, because he was too ugly, and it would take too long for him to get there. Sadly, Carmichael told Barnacle Billy about it. Billy said he USED to go to SeaFair, but they wouldn’t let him anymore because, they said, "What kind of octopus has a beard?"

Carmichael and Billy wondered if they could have their own parade somewhere. Billy said he knew a human named Captain Ken who might know. They found Captain Ken on Edmonds beach during a low tide, and told him their sad story, and how they wanted to have their own parade. Captain Ken told them that he used to go to SeaFair, too, but he lost his big black pirate boots, and they no longer let him participate in SeaFair, because, they said, "What kind of pirate wears flip flops?"

BUT Captain Ken said he knew a neighborhood where everyone was very friendly and accepting, especially the kids at Brier Elementary. So, he went to the principal at Brier Elementary, and she said they should absolutely have a parade in Brier. Carmichael was worried about being too slow to get there in time, but the principal said that she would have a special Sea Cucumber Day at the end of the school year, and the kids would sing a magical song that would reach Carmichael wherever he was in Puget Sound, letting him know that it was time to head up to Brier for the parade in six weeks.

Carmichael asked, "What should we call this parade?"
Captain Ken said, "Well, we can't call it the SeaFair Torchlight Parade; that's already taken."
Barnacle Billy said, "We could call it... SeaSCARE... because Carmichael's spikes are kinda scary.”
Captain Ken said, “And Barnacle Billy's beard is pretty scary.”
Carmichael said, “And Captain Ken's breath is VERY scary when he eats his favorite Limberger and liverwurst sandwiches for lunch."

Captain Ken said, "Also, we don't have any torches around here, so we can't call it ‘Torchlight.’"
Carmichael said, "Except if you light a match around Ken's breath after lunch, and that only lasts a second."
Barnacle Billy said, "But, there are lots of PORCHLIGHTS in this neighborhood. We could call it the SeaScare PORCHlight Parade!"

And that’s how the SeaScare Porchlight Parade began, and how our beloved Carmichael the Sea Cucumber, Barnacle Billy, and Captain Ken finally got the parade they always wanted.
